Granada and Barcelona are symbols of two very different ideas of Spain.
BARCELONA
Barcelona is the cosmopolitan capital of Catalonia; it is famous above all for its art and architecture.
The Sagrada Familia, Park Güell and the other original and extravagant buildings designed by Antoni Gaudi are the symbol of the city.
In the ‘700, after the war of succession and the advent of the Bourbon dynasty, Catalonia lost its independence.
In the following centuries the region recovered and lost various degrees of autonomy from the central power.
After the civil war of 1936-1939 power passed to Francisco Franco, who again canceled the autonomy of Catalonia and Catalan was declared illegal.
In 1975 Franco died and Catalonia voted for the formation of the new Spanish democracy, whose Constitution recognizes extensive autonomy to the regions.
On October 27, 2017, independence from Spain was unilaterally declared, which caused the Spanish central government to dismiss the political bodies of the Generalitat.
GRANADA
It is famous for the grandiose examples of medieval architecture that date back to the period of Arab domination, of which the Alhambra is the best known (and visited monument of Spain).
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984, the Alhambra is a fortified complex that includes royal palaces, tranquil interior patios and bodies of water dating back to the Nasrid dynasty.
Instead the nearby Generalife is instead a complex of beautiful fountains and silent orchards.
Granada in Latin means “pomegranate”, a fruit that appears on the coat of arms of the city: it is a symbol of wealth for Jews, of the Passion for Christians and of Paradise for Muslims.
It was the ancient capital of the Nasrid kingdom and has an architectural set characterized by numerous influences belonging to the Christian, Arab and Jewish dominations.
It is a symbol of the history of Spain and it is here that you can taste the true Spanish atmosphere as we Italians understand it.
